The Google search engine is changing its logo this Monday, April 22, 2024. To celebrate Earth Day, each letter is drawn by a landscape that brings hope for biodiversity. The query refers to the search “progress against climate change”.
It’s International Mother Earth Day. This day, adopted by the United Nations in 2009, is officially celebrated on April 22. In 2024, Google has chosen to make its own contribution to this celebration, through a Doodle.
Celebrating “progress against climate change”
The usual search engine logo is now replaced by a set of photos taken from the sky, showing various places on Earth. Clicking on it returns you to the search “ progress against climate change “.
The reliefs of the photographed landscape draw the letters of the word “Google”. “ This annual Earth Day Doodle features aerial photos of the planet’s natural beauty and biodiversity and reminds us of the importance of protecting it for future generations », Explains Google on its site dedicated to Doodle. The landscapes were chosen to represent “ places around the world where people, communities and governments work every day to protect the planet’s natural beauty, biodiversity and resources », adds Google.
Where were the Earth Day Google Doodle photos taken?
Here are the places to which each letter of the logo corresponds:
- G : the Turks and Caicos Islands, located south of the Bahamas, with rich biodiversity and where legislation attempts to protect the Turks and Caicos Islands cyclure (an iguana),
- O : Arrecife Alacrán, a coral reef in the Gulf of Mexico, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site,
- O : the Vatnajökull national park, in the south-east of Iceland, known for its varied landscapes,
- G : Jaú National Park, the second largest national park in Brazil, which protects many species, such as the margay (or tiger cat),
- L : the Great Green Wall, an initiative of the African Union to create green ecosystems on a long corridor crossing the continent from Senegal to Djibouti,
- E : the nature reserves of the Pilbara Islands, in Australia, protecting endangered species of turtles and birds.
Google specifies that it chose these places to highlight the hope and optimism of these initiatives to protect biodiversity, but also to remind “ that much remains to be done to combat the climate crisis and the loss of biodiversity “. This serious tone is not so surprising. Two years ago, Google already created a Doodle (seriously) for Earth Day.
