what is this phenomenon that women over 35 practice more and more

This Tuesday, January 23, 2024, Santé Publique France published a report on alcohol consumption by adults in France for the year 2021. If it appears that the French are drinking less alcohol than before, a new behavior tends to increase among women over 35: binge-drinking. But what is this new phenomenon?

The French have always been known to drink a lot of alcohol and according to the report of a study carried out in 2021 on alcohol consumption in France, the results of which were published this Tuesday January 23, 2024 by Santé Publique France this always seems to be the case. According to this system set up in 1992 to monitor the state of health of the French, two phenomena must be taken into consideration: if consumption still remains very substantial, it has nevertheless decreased compared to previous years and women tend to to drink as much as men when it comes to “excessive occasional consumption“.

Indeed, we can read in the results of the survey that over the last thirty years between 1992 and 2021 alcohol consumption has been divided by three in the country, a figure which also tends to decrease among weekly consumers, 62 .6% in 2000 against 39% in 2021, and among daily consumers, 23.9% in 1992 against 8% in 2021. If the organization justifies this drop in consumption by the implementation of the Evin law since 1991 , the ban on sales to minors under 16 also has something to do with it. However, another more problematic trend is that of binge-drinking among women over 35.

Binge-drinking: a male behavior copied by women

Raphaël Andler, co-author of the study published by Santé Publique France reveals that binge-drinking or occasional heavy drinking is clearly increasing among women over 35 in France: “for several years, in France and abroad, we have observed a rapprochement in behavior between men and women» he explains. Even if consumption tends to decrease among men, it still remains very high among women, but also more frequent.

According to the survey, daily alcohol consumption among women aged 35 to 55 over the last twelve months has increased since 2017, 22.3% at the time compared to 27.9% in 2021. A finding found among women aged 35 and over who report significantly more IPA, occasional heavy drinking or binge-drinking. This phenomenon is described as consuming six or more glasses of alcohol on a single occasion. A trend which is explained by the organization by the evolution of society on feminist issues such as the increase in the age of the first child or the first marriage or the greater share of women in the labor market.
