What the success of the Fallout series really means for the future of video games

Despite the success and popularity of the series falloutbroadcast on Amazon, Bethesda will not rush the development of a fifth opus.

Bethesda and Amazon had a keen eye in developing an adaptation of the Fallout saga into a TV series. The success, both critically and publicly, was immediate. It logically has a positive impact on the popularity of video games. Even the title Fallout 76, shunned upon its release, is currently having a good time. Bethesda could therefore be tempted to pull on the rope, by accelerating the development of a possible Fallout 5. But that’s not the studio’s goal.

Bethesda could actually ride the wave of Fallout craze. But the company does not prefer to shake up its initial plans, confided Todd Howard during an interview with the YouTube channel MrMattyPlays and published on June 16. The creative director of Fallout prefers to temper expectations. “ I can’t say anything at the moment (…) But we don’t need to rush anything “, he says.

For Fallout 5, you will have to be patient

Todd Howard is obviously delighted with the turn of events: the series broadcast exclusively on Amazon Prime Video has given Fallout a big boost. But this is not a reason to prioritize this license over the others (The Elder Scrolls and Starfield). He understands that fans want to get their hands on a new game, except that “ these things take time “.

He also explains: “ I don’t think it’s bad to create a gap… We just want to do things right and make sure that everything we do for a franchise — whether it’s Elder Scrolls, Fallout or Starfield — becomes highlights for those and those who love these games as much as we do. » And he does not prefer to advance on Fallout 5 by announcing it much too early, in relation to the launch (an error made for The Elder Scrolls 6made official in 2018 and placed under radio silence since).

The most impatient Fallout aficionados will therefore have to turn to Fallout 76, the latest opus to date, which continues to be powered by the developers. During the Xbox Games Showcase 2024, broadcast by Microsoft, an extension was presented, already available. In 2025, the RPG will offer the opportunity to play a Ghoul – a first in the history of the saga. “ The fans always want more. We won’t stop working on Fallout. Our efforts are focused, for the moment, on Fallout 76 », Recalls Todd Howard, who also reveals that Bethesda is delighted with the situation in which the game finds itself today.
