Since the announcement of the withdrawal of the last American soldiers from Afghanistan on 1er May 2021, the Taliban stepped up their offensive in the country. In the space of three months, the armed group grew from 78 controlled districts to at least 224, or more than half of the country.

The Islamist group’s propaganda shows a routed Afghan national army, surrenders without prior fighting, and the capture of military equipment by the Taliban. The Afghan government, meanwhile, is highlighting the resistance of the army and local communities. But despite continued US air support to Afghan forces, the Taliban are gradually moving closer to major cities.
