What to do this weekend in Trouville? Our selection near the Flaubert hotel

It is with relief that Flaubert regulars have found the charm of this old hotel – the only one in Trouville on the beach – intact, after several months of work. No design revolution in this large Norman house dating from 1936, refuge for many Parisians, including Patrick Modiano who came to rest there after receiving the Nobel.

The restoration has preserved the historic furniture: the old reception furniture has taken its place, like the Louis XV console, the Lloyd armchairs or the patinated Chesterfield sofa. And on the four floors are scattered, as before, 1900 posters praising Trouville, its casino, its seaside baths. On the other hand, the eclecticism of the original colors and prints has given way to a harmony of navy blue , light gray, beige and white. To go up to the rooms – from 15 square meters, for the Tiny, to 45 square meters for a suite – you take the beautiful staircase or the wooden elevator.

Room 34, a superior category, overlooks the sea. The large bed rests on white-painted woodwork, topped by a long shelf where trinkets, plaster casts of shells and antique paperback books are placed. The striped wallpaper, the soft wool bed throw, the sand-colored curtains, the large desk – a rare luxury in hotels – and the brass lamps create a peaceful and cozy atmosphere.

In the morning, breakfast can be taken on the balcony above the still deserted beach, or at the Bovary, the small hotel bar near the reception, with its bow windows, its long bench with a violin back, its pedestal tables and its good English tea room atmosphere.
