What to know before choosing your child's toothpaste

Your little one's little quenottes are already out! We will soon have to tackle cleaning. Be careful though, a child's toothpaste is not to be chosen blindly. We help you in your choice.

Just like the toothbrush, the choice of toothpaste is tedious. What taste ? Does it sting? Is it suitable for his age? To begin with, you should know that the main criterion to look at is fluoride. This mineral element, used in the right dose, helps prevent cavities by making tooth enamel less sensitive to acid attacks. In France, 99% of toothpastes contain fluoride and those intended for children must be carefully studied by parents. Too much fluoride can be toxic for a little one. Also, depending on the age, it is important to learn about the different categories.

When to start brushing your child's teeth?

As soon as the first small quenots appear, you can start cleaning them with a toothbrush and water, as the child cannot yet spit. The use of toothpaste, meanwhile, is recommended from 2 years.

1 to 3 years

From 2 years old, it is recommended to use a toothpaste with 250 to 600 ppm of fluoride. Place a dab of toothpaste on your child's toothbrush and brush gently.

From 3 years

We can start to introduce two brushings per day, including one in the evening. The toothpaste should now contain between 500 ppm and 1000 ppm.

From 6 years old

The two daily brushings should be kept, this time with fluoride toothpaste between 1000 and 1450 ppm, for 2 minutes.

What criteria to choose a toothpaste?

Since we want the best for our little ones, it's important to take a close look at toothpaste labels before rushing off.

  • Be careful that the toothpaste does not sting, it may entertain your child the first time, but may make them feel less inclined to do it again a second time, maybe even frighten them.
  • Taste ! While this criterion may appear optional, it is in fact essential. Indeed, the fruity tastes (which are somewhat reminiscent of candy), encourage children to brush their teeth regularly.

On the advice of our readers, members of the expert club, we recommend the Bio Kids toothpaste from Vademecum. Their children particularly liked its taste and texture. Its composition is all clean and Ecocert Greenlife certified according to the COSMOS standard. And, icing on the cake, there is a mint or strawberry flavor!
