The National Institute for Geographic and Forest Information (IGN) has announced the establishment of a major national program to cover LiDAR HD. Objective: map in 3D the whole of France and the overseas territories with the exception of Guyana.
The cost of the program, the results of which will be open to all, amounts to 60 million euros and should be completed by 2025.
Various uses
This vast Lidar HD coverage program is a great first for France, which wishes to provide the most precise resources possible to all local authorities and players in the territory. The IGN plans a total of 7,000 flight hours to accurately map France’s terrain, surface and infrastructure by sector. This large cartography will be the most precise and densest assembled on the territory, with images composed of point clouds presenting 10 points per square meter.
The IGN explains that the maps available at the end of the project will make it possible to analyze and follow the evolutions of the territory and to meet the needs ” a broad spectrum of public policies with a spatial dimension “. This will be used in particular in the context of the prevention of natural risks, knowledge of forest resources, management of agricultural plots, land use planning, preservation of biodiversity, internal security or even energy transition.
Work already started last year and the program has already been able to map some 110,000 km² of territory, or 20% of the target area to be mapped, divided into blocks of 50 km x 50 km to facilitate the use of in-flight technology.
