The school holidays are coming to an end. But before the start of the school year knocks on the door, here is a small summary of the changes that the year 2021-2022 has in store for us.

When does the 2021 school year start?

On December 16, the decree fixing the school calendar was unveiled. This year, for students from kindergarten to high school in metropolitan France, the “big” back to school 2021 will take place. Thursday, September 2, 2021. For teachers, the pre-start will take place on Wednesday, September 1, 2021.
However, for students entering higher education (universities, school, etc.), the start of the school year may be different. In general, the start of the academic year takes place between mid-September and mid-October. But to know the exact date, we advise you to check with your establishment.

What is the health protocol planned for schools, colleges and high schools?

The previous year (2020-2021), for almost the entire school year, teaching in attendance was possible thanks to the implementation of a strict protocol.
For the next school year, the rules change. In a document posted online by the Ministry of National Education, Youth and Sport, the government outlines the health protocol planned for students and members of the teaching staff. Several scenarios are then considered, accompanied by a protocol evolving according to the health situation, in order to put in place proportionate measures.
To do this, a graduation in four levels has been established, going from level 1 in green to level 4 in red. To find out the status applied to your school, you will have to wait a few days before the start of the school year.

For now, here is what has been determined for the students:

Level 1 / green level:

  • The establishment will host in face-to-face for all students ;
  • the wearing a mask will remain compulsory for middle and high school students in confined spaces and the rules relating to wearing a mask outdoors in the general population must be respected;
  • Physical and sports activities will be authorized indoors and outdoors ;
  • The limitation of mixing between groups of pupils will not be compulsory;
  • In the canteen, the spaces will be arranged and the organization designed in such a way as toat the greatest possible distance between the students.

Level 2 / yellow level:

  • The establishment will host in face-to-face for all students ;
  • the wearing a mask will be compulsory for elementary school students (CP-CM2), middle school and high school students in confined spaces and the rules relating to the wearing of a mask outdoors in the general population are respected;
  • Physical and sports activities will take place mainly outside. However, if indoor practice is essential (due to bad weather, availability of facilities, etc.) a distance of 2 meters must be respected; the limitation of mixing between pupils of different groups (class, groups of classes or level) will be required;
  • In the canteen, the group stability will be sought and, as far as possible, the same pupils eat every day at the same table in the first stage. It will also be recommended to organize an individual service (trays, cutlery, water, serving on the plate or on the tray)

Level 3 / orange level:

  • In high school, for establishments that require it, hybridization will be possible (in particular when this is made necessary for the proper application of the measures provided for by this health framework);
  • the wearing a mask will be compulsory for elementary school students, middle school and high school students in enclosed spaces as well as outdoors ;
  • Physical and sports activities take place mainly outdoors. However, when indoor practice is essential (bad weather, availability of facilities, etc.), only low-intensity activities compatible with wearing a mask and a distance of 2 meters will be authorized;
  • The limitation of mixing between pupils of different groups (class, groups of classes or level) will be required. First, the no brewing between students of different classes must be observed during the restoration.

What is the protocol for vaccination in middle and high schools?

On July 28, the Minister of National Education reassured many French people, saying that theThe health pass will not be compulsory at the entrance of schools. However, vaccination centers will be present in or near middle and high schools. Which will represent, in total, between 6,000 to 7,000 vaccination centers. School and civilian medical personnel will be mobilized for vaccination.

From the first days of the start of the school year, parents can, for more information, contact members of the administration and the teaching staff of the establishment. Each student wishing to be vaccinated must present a written parental authorization.

Specialization in “physical education, sports practices and culture”

From the start of the 2021 school year, a new specialty will be launched in the general tracks of French high schools. The first year students will be able to choose the option “Physical education, sports practices and culture”, allowing sports enthusiasts to develop this center of interest.
This teaching will provide the student with:

  • a thorough and balanced practice sports, physical and artistic activities;
  • from transversal skills (self-confidence; managing one’s emotions; critical thinking; sense of commitment; teamwork, project work, etc.) essential to the success of their career;
  • a critical and enlightened look on their practice and the diversity of their issues;
  • a knowledge of the diversity of professional sectors related to sport and sports practice.


So that young athletes can also practice outside of school time, the government is setting up a new allowance: the Pass’Sport. Aid up to 50 euros, including all registrations in a sports club at the start of the 2021 school year.
