The new POTENTIAL experiment, which will make it possible to try out a digital identity wallet at European level, has been launched.
Digital identity could take a new turn on the Old Continent with the POTENTIAL initiative, which will be deployed in 19 EU countries and Ukraine. These July 10 and 11, France, coordinator of the program, welcomes with the Minister of Digital Transition Jean-Noël Barrot its European partners for the launch.
France first, then Europe
” 38 ministries, 34 state operators, 9 research centers, 51 large companies and 12 start-ups », here is the number of actors declined by the Ministry of the Interior to present the POTENTIAL project, which benefits from an envelope of 16 million euros. The latter aims to transfer the various identity documents of a bearer to digital format to facilitate procedures and improve security.
The initiative will be tested over a period of more than two years (26 months). It will first be set up at the national level, where it has many public and private partners in France (Thales, Orange, Ministry of the Interior, etc.), until October 2024. The second phase will be used to assess the robustness of the system at cross-border level.
Many test uses
The objectives are solid and assumed. ” Our common ambition is that from June 2025, the digital identity wallet will become the identity companion of French and European citizens allowing them to guarantee the security of their procedures “, thus explained the Minister of the Interior. The daily life of the French could change if all the following use cases are validated:
- prove an identity during procedures on online administrative services;
- create a “digital companion” that can be presented on the smartphone instead of the driving license to the authorities or for vehicle rental;
- set up electronic medical prescriptions allowing the sharing of data by the user;
- authorize qualified electronic signatures for contracts;
- offer proof of identity to open an online bank account;
- register a SIM card for opening a telephone line.
