2024 will mark a communication marathon for Ankama until the arrival of Dofus 2 Unity. After the publication of the FAQ following the December live a few days ago and with a little hindsight, the editorial team returns to the hot points around the port, following it up to the forum.

Dofus 2 Unity will be on mobile, and with a hero mode

Every time the Unity port is mentioned, major reminders are in order. Even recently, Ankama confirmed its arrival for 2024. This will offer the same gameplay (even in terms of fluidity and multi-account) as Dofus Flash, with a new modern client. The servers as well as your characters will remain fine. A beta will take place before the final release for a few months (still in 2024). We can therefore hope for something around the second half of the year, knowing that the company is planning a communications marathon for “around 6 months”. Finally, as soon as access to the client is unlocked, new servers, single-account and multi-account, will conclude the sequence. Beyond that, Flash servers, as in 2.0, will gradually become compatible with the new version of Dofus.

The question of hero mode for Dofus 2 Unity

Present on Wakfu, Hero mode allows you to access several characters on an account from a single window. This idea was originally mentioned by Logan a few years ago for the since abandoned “Dofus Unity” project. Be careful, this game wasn’t the port, so get it out of your head.

For Dofus 2 Unity, the answer is… more difficult to determine. During the live, Papinaut and Logan mentioned that the mode “will not be present upon release”. Yet the opening nuance changes to “No, that’s not planned at the moment.” » in the forum FAQ. Behind this ambiguity of communication, we can ask questions about the integration, or not, of hero mode.

In any case, if such a thing were to happen on Dofus 2, many modifications would have to be made. Whether it’s account management, transfers or even combat gameplay, the current version of our MMO, on Unity or Flash, is not compatible with such a system.

Missing in Action: Group Search for PvM

While Dofus Touch gained a group system for dungeons in 2023, Dofus 2 can still wait. And the patience of the players is quite exemplary on this subject. A first serious mention of the research dates back to 2017, with “important” reflections for integration before the arrival of single-account servers. Since then, we have been able to witness several mergers and 8 editions of Temporis, without the system appearing.

Will the Unity port change anything? Unfortunately, the answer is no. Group search remains in the limbo of “coming soon” features, but never “on the schedule”.

It would actually be logical, with the evolution of the game, to have this tool for dungeons. Please note that such a feature cannot be offered upon release of DOFUS Unity.

On the question of features, Ankama still seems to greatly lack direction for Unity, leaving a number of decisions on future community interactions in 2024 to rest. The big news from Ankama Live was the formalization of a mobile horizon for Dofus 2 Unity. If we already knew that the company wanted to think about it, the December presentation set the record straight. It was a much clearer ambition than the players knew. Unlike hero mode, this is something that will happen in the more or less near future, at least after the release of Unity.

This announcement has rightly raised many eyebrows. On the one hand, Ankama’s certainty of having already made a solid decision on the subject is intriguing, so often linked to “We would like” rather than “It will be done”. On the other hand, this occurs quite randomly during the live, without elaboration on the subject, leaving a great deal of vagueness. Mobile integration cannot be done without adaptations to the game, whether in terms of interfaces, gameplay or economic model. This depends on choices which will more or less impact Dofus 2 and which, until further notice, will not be known. A blur of communication which underlines other parts of the FAQ, then taking on a completely different meaning.

For the moment, we have not yet communicated on the existing paid services and the new ones that will appear on DOFUS Unity.

However, we welcome the decision to maintain subscriptions for Dofus at a fixed price, from €5 per month to €48.50 per year. There would be “for the moment, no reason to move that”. It remains to be seen what considerations will surround these “new paid services”.

Appearances of Dofus 2 Unity characters

First of all, note that it will be impossible to go back in terms of character appearances. Ankama wishes to propose a new artistic direction, which combines with technical requirements for the equipment and positions of “common bases” between classes. However, developments cannot be ruled out. The most attentive will even have seen it on the Ecaflip. In the following image, we will notice, for example, alterations to the details (dice, facial expressions) as well as a balancing of the proportions of the body. The biggest difference, however, seems to be in terms of colorimetry.

It is important to keep in mind that you have had the opportunity to observe an experimental version of what DOFUS could be under Unity, but it is by no means a final version.

We will note in these changes a taking into account of the feedback of the players, in particular by a balancing (minor certainly) of the body for the head of the Ecaflip and its feet. Considering that Ankama wants at all costs to present a new artistic direction, this is already a good point.

However, throughout Dofus 2 Unity we may regret sometimes unilateral decisions, without waiting for validation through communication. Thus, we will mention the removal of the basic Tactical mode or even the loss of its customization. On this point, the Dofus team seems to have regrets regarding the feature, which is nevertheless important on the player side. Justifications will be expected in the coming months and communication will be critical for the future of the DOFUS project.

Immersion will not be negatively impacted, given that an overwhelming majority of players use the current tactical mode, which already cuts immersion entirely.

If we follow Ankama’s intentions, the next few months will be decisive for the constitution of the future of Dofus. It will be necessary to discuss and intervene on the official forum, in response to communications, to express one’s opinion. No return will be too much, with many decisions around porting still unclear. For unilateral ones, not giving up will be the watchword as far as possible (and with respect), mainly for Tactical mode. For the appearances of the characters, the evolution of the artistic direction does not seem negotiable outside of the details.
