WhatsApp, a new hack… to the answering machine
Like millions of French people, you probably use the WhatsApp application on a daily basis. In addition, like many users, you probably turn off your smartphone or switch it to airplane mode before going to bed. And it is in this specific case that your WhatsApp account may be in danger.
On Twitter, a cybersecurity researcher has indeed shared a simple technique that a malicious user can use to take control of your WhatsApp account thanks to… your answering machine.
Two-Step Verification, Again and Again
To do this, the hacker will use your phone number to connect to WhatsApp, which sends a verification SMS to the real owner of the number. The latter then remains on hold, and the hacker performs a new attempt, this time requesting verification by call. As the smartphone is off (or in airplane mode), the WhatsApp service will leave a voice message on the user’s mailbox.
The hacker only has to access the remote messaging system using the secret code (four digits) which allows access to the latter. In some countries, this code is composed by default of the last four digits of the telephone number. You understood, the pirate then only has to enter the code, retrieve the identification number left by WhatsApp and take ownership of the account in question.
In order to guard against this type of attack (and other misadventures), it is obviously recommended to modify the access code to your voice mail. In addition, it is strongly recommended to activate the two-step verification offered in the settings of the WhatsApp application.
When a WhatsApp account is hacked, the recovery process can take several days during which time the hacker may try to scam associated contacts and/or distribute malware. Caution, therefore.
