The popular messenger WhatsApp regularly has new functions. These are often accompanied by new symbols that are not always self-explanatory at first glance. This is also currently the case, because there is a new sign in the app that is reminiscent of a ghost. It is displayed within your chats next to some received stickers – but not next to all of them.
If you tap on the symbol, the meaning quickly becomes clear. The “ghost” will then direct you to your avatar sticker set. If you have not yet created a WhatsApp avatar, you will be prompted to do so.
Avatar is a new feature that Messenger introduced in December 2022. The feature allows you to create a virtual image of yourself. On the one hand, the avatar can be used as a profile picture, on the other hand, WhatsApp creates a sticker set that can be used in chats.
If a contact now sends you a sticker from their personal avatar set, this is symbolized by the “ghost” next to it. WhatsApp may want to use the symbol to encourage you to create an avatar and use it to react to the sticker you receive. Messenger is also currently promoting its avatars on Twitter – with a humorous tweet.
Recently, a bookmark sign on WhatsApp caused confusion because it has a different meaning in Messenger than in the browser.
