Want to hide your locked chats from prying eyes? WhatsApp has just added an extra layer of protection by allowing users to set a secret code to access their folder.

Locked conversations even better protected

Everyone has little things to hide. WhatsApp knows this very well, and therefore decided to launch locked chats last May. Thanks to this functionality, it is possible to limit access to a conversation using the authentication system of your smartphone: the traditional unlock code, facial recognition on iPhone with FaceID or fingerprint on Android devices and old iPhones (TouchID).

Then simply slide your finger down on the home screen to display the Locked Conversations folder. After clicking on it and identifying the user, WhatsApp simply provides access to all of these conversations. To further secure this folder, private messaging has just added a secret code function.

To activate this new feature, a small operation must be carried out in the locked discussions folder: touch the three small dots at the top right of the screen; open the Locked Chat Settings menu; check the Hide locked chats option; define your secret code (sequence of letters, numbers, special characters or even emojis); confirm it by entering it again.

As soon as this security is in place, the locked discussions folder will disappear from the home screen. To access it, you will now have to type your secret code in the search bar.

The function has been deployed since Thursday November 30, 2023. It may therefore not appear immediately for everyone, and will be available in the coming weeks.

WhatsApp does not intend to stop there. Indeed, the platform announces in its blog post: “We look forward to enhancing chat locking with other features to improve privacy”.
