WhatsApp is rolling out an exciting new feature for its beta users on iOS: the ability to see which contacts have recently been online. This new feature comes a few weeks after the arrival of a similar feature on the beta version for Android.
Spotted by WABetaInfo, a site specializing in monitoring application updates, this new feature is a continuation of WhatsApp’s efforts to improve the user experience. Indeed, the previous update (version 24.8.10.70) offered contact suggestions in order to launch discussions more easily. Today, the Meta group seems to want to go a little further with its messaging by offering fans of the application an overview of the recent activity of their contacts, similar to the functionality already seen on Android last month.
WhatsApp concocts a feature to simplify exchanges with your contacts
Concretely, the WhatsApp beta update for iOS (version 24.9.10.71), available via TestFlight, includes a new section in the contact list. This allows you to visualize which of them have recently been active on the application. Please understand that this feature does not provide real-time status of your contacts’ online presence, but rather a condensed history of their recent activity. This addition aims to make communication easier by allowing users to identify contacts who may be available to chat or make a call.

User confidentiality preserved
WhatsApp, however, assures that the development of this functionality was done with respect for the privacy of users. Contacts who have hidden their “Last connected” status and their online presence will therefore not appear in this list. According to WABetaInfouser privacy will remain a priority for the instant messaging application.
Available to a limited number of beta testers at this time, the Recently Active feature is expected to roll out more widely to iOS in the coming weeks. In the meantime, and if you missed it, know that Meta is currently developing a dialer for WhatsApp in order to transform your application into a real phone.
