  • Meta is planning a payment option for WhatsApp.
  • Transactions should be possible freely and without regulation.
  • The service starts in the United States of America.

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging services in the world and continues to grow. Now the messenger service of the former Facebook group, now Meta, is to receive a payment function. On the basis of your own crypto currency, sending money should be as easy as sending a message attachment.

This is made possible by Meta’s own Novi service, through which money transfers are processed free of charge using Pax Dollars. In contrast to other crypto currencies such as Bitcoin, this one is stable in value because it is linked to the exchange rate of the real US dollar. A Pax dollar is always equivalent to a US dollar, as Novi explains on its own site.

The actual dispatch of the crypto currency takes place via a separate menu entry in the chat, which is reached via the small paper clip. AndroidPolice reports that the digital currency should be exchanged for a regular currency via a connected bank account.

Meta has already tried in the past to add a payment service to the messenger service’s portfolio via WhatsApp Pay. The service, which is also supposed to enable unregulated money transactions, has been tested in Brazil and India since 2020. In Brazil in particular, this has led to a long legal battle that was only resolved this year.

WhatsApp Pay, however, was based on the direct trading of currencies, such as the Indian rupee in India, which is generally subject to government supervision. This had legal consequences in both countries. It remains to be seen whether Novi will be more successful as the service basically bypasses this hurdle.
