A current example shows again that you should only purchase software from official sources. Because there are currently modified versions of WhatsApp in circulation that advertise new functions. Instead, however, you will receive malware that steals your personal data.

The dangerous downloads are offered outside of the Google Play Store and are mainly aimed at Android users. The developer behind the fake WhatsApp versions is called “HeyMods”.

WhatsApp boss Will Cathart announced via Twitter that the in-house security team has met with Google to fix the problem. Google Play Protect is now able to detect and disable malicious versions of WhatsApp. Even if you have already downloaded it.
