WhatsApp users get a new function with which photos and videos sent can only be viewed once.

WhatsApp recently promised its users new privacy functions. A new feature is now available in the beta version of the application, with which photos and videos sent can only be viewed once by the recipient before the content is deleted. Among other things, the portal “WABetaInfo” and “Caschy’s Blog” report on the new function.

The self-destruction mode, which is referred to there as “View Once” or “Once”, will therefore be rolled out for users from beta version 2.21.14.3 for Android. According to the reports, the function apparently does not appear in every user at the moment. It is currently not known when the feature will finally be available for all Android and iOS users.

“For more privacy, your photo or video disappears from the chat after the recipient has opened it,” WhatsApp explains the new function in the application, as can be seen on a screenshot that was published on “Caschy’s blog”. But it is also warned: “Nevertheless, screenshots can possibly be made beforehand.” This means that users should note that the other person could have saved an image in this way before it was deleted.

Privacy features previously announced

In mid-June, the company behind Messenger launched a multi-stage campaign in Germany and the UK to make users aware of how WhatsApp is committed to user privacy. WhatsApp had also confirmed, among other things, to expand a function for disappearing messages introduced last summer.
