Sending WhatsApp messages above the clouds was previously not possible or expensive. Because on a plane you usually have to put your cell phone in flight mode. You can usually only establish an internet connection during the flight via the respective airline’s WiFi offer. However, these services usually require a fee and are not exactly cheap. That will change at Lufthansa from January.

As the airline now announces, the Free Messaging service will be available to you on short- and medium-haul flights in Europe from mid-January 2024. This allows you to send free messages, including photos and videos, via the aircraft’s WiFi connection. Lufthansa is already offering you 30 minutes of free access to FlyNet Chat on selected flights until December 31st. From January 15th, this tariff will be replaced by Free Messaging.

FlyNet Chat becomes free

For other activities – such as streaming films and series, you still have to pay a fee on board. According to the airline, prices are expected to almost halve next year. You currently pay between 3 and 12 euros for FlyNet, depending on the tariff and duration.

The prerequisite for using the new free service is to log in to FlyNet with a Miles & More service card number or with an email address registered with the Lufthansa Group Travel ID. If you don’t have this, you can still register during the flight.
