WhatsApp: That means the new icon in the main menu

• WhatsApp introduces a new area in Messenger with Community.

The WhatsApp main menu on Android phones previously consisted of a shortcut to the camera and the “Chats”, “Status” and “Calls” tabs. But now the camera symbol has moved to the top right corner. Instead, a new icon can now be seen in its place on the left. It shows three people.

The same on the iPhone: the camera shortcut has been deleted without replacement. There is now the same new symbol in the middle as seen on Android phones and “Community” is written below it. What is behind it?

“Community” is a new section on WhatsApp. In a community you can unite and centrally manage up to 50 thematically related groups. In a tutorial we will show you how to create a community on WhatsApp.

Feature is aimed at organizations and companies

The function is intended to make it easier for organizations and companies to work with Messenger. WhatsApp explains that you should continue to use the regular groups for private communication with friends and families.

However, private groups will also receive a practical innovation with the community update: a tool for surveys is now available to you here.

Incidentally, groups from a community also appear in the regular chat list. There you can recognize them by the fact that behind the group photo you can see other circles that show, among other things, the image of the associated community.

Not yet available on all devices

WhatsApp had already started to gradually activate the function for individual accounts in mid-November. According to our research, the rollout had started in India and Indonesia, and the feature is now also reaching the first devices in Germany. An app update is apparently not necessary for this. The function is activated on the server side.
