It is now much simpler and more secure to transfer your WhatsApp conversation history from one device to another. We explain how to do it.

And we thank Signal (which recently copied WhatsApp on formatting, it’s fair game) which already offered the same tool.

An expected feature on WhatsApp

Until now, WhatsApp relied solely on a cloud-centric system to transfer its data from one mobile device to a new one. Compatible from Android to Android, from iOS to iOS, but also from iOS to Android and vice versa, this certainly functional method can however be a bit tedious.

Now, WhatsApp offers a purely local method, based on a QR code system found at Signal in particular. On the other hand, this time it will be necessary to have smartphones or tablets operating under the same mobile OS. If you change dairy, you will always have to go through the old method.

How to use the new QR code system

Here are the few steps to follow to transfer your chat history from an old device to a new one:

  • Make sure that both terminals are on the same WiFi network;
  • Open WhatsApp on the old device and head to Settings > Chats > Forward Chats;
  • Tap “Start” and give permission to scan nearby devices;
  • On the new device, open WhatsApp and log in with the same account as on the old one;
  • A message will appear asking if you want to transfer your data. Press “Start” to display a QR code;
  • All that remains is to scan it with the old device to start the transfer! Once this is completed, your account will be disconnected on the old terminal.

And if you want to use WhatsApp on both devices at the same time, remember that the Meta service now supports multidevice with the same account, but also multiaccounts on the same device.

It’s simple, WhatsApp is a fantastic instant messaging application that also offers basic voice and video calls. The less demanding will find their account, the others much less with the impoverished desktop version and the limit of group calls to eight participants.
