If you buy a new cell phone and want to take your WhatsApp chat history with you, you have several options for moving. That’s how it’s done.

Who buys a new cell phone and the messenger service WhatsApp Installed there, it initially looks at a yawning void. Only the chat groups in which you are a member are in the list – without any chat history. But do not despair: The conversations can be moved quickly. That’s how it’s done.

From Android to Android

To transfer WhatsApp chat histories manually, users proceed as follows: In the WhatsApp settings under “Chats” there is the option “Chat backup”. Select this and click the “Save” button to save the history. Then connect the old device to a PC using a USB cable and copy the backup named “msgstore.db.crypt” to the PC. The file is located in the “WhatsApp / Databases” folder and is either on the internal memory or on the SD card. Then connect the new mobile phone to the PC and copy “msgstore.db.crypt” into the WhatsApp folder. Only then start WhatsApp on the new device and re-register with its phone number. The app automatically recognizes the backup and is imported after user approval.

Moving is easier via Google’s cloud storage. The Google Drive option can also be found as a storage location under the backup options. Anyone who uses this option and then dials in on the new device will be asked whether the chats should be restored. Click on “Restore” – done!

From iOS to iOS

If you use WhatsApp on an iPhone, on the other hand, you have no choice: In order to be able to migrate chat histories, the cloud storage iCloud must be activated. The subsequent procedure is then as with Android: Simply register on the new device with the telephone number and answer the question about the recovery in the affirmative – that’s it.

Between Android and iOS

It is a little more complicated for users who switch from an iOS to an Android device or vice versa: During the move from iOS to Android using the application “Wazzap Migrator Lite” is possible free of charge, it only works the other way around with the chargeable version of the little helper.

The WhatsApp developers are also working on a solution: It has recently become easier, at least on Samsung devices, to move from iOS to Android. However, only for Samsung phones that run on Android 10 or newer and have the Smart Switch app installed. According to the Facebook subsidiary WhatsApp, user-friendly solutions for other manufacturers are already in the making.
