WhatsApp is currently distributing an app update for Android phones. This gives the camera button in chats a new function. This happens if you press it longer.

- Instead of using the microphone, you can now start it by holding down the camera symbol in the chat.
- The change now applies to iPhone and Android phones.
You can use the camera symbol in the text field in your WhatsApp chat to take photos and videos and then send them directly to the chat. All you have to do is tap the symbol and the WhatsApp camera opens. With the update to the version 2.24.5.76 (Android) respectively 6/24/77 (iOS), the button now has another feature. If you hold down longer, you can record a video instant message.
These are videos that are a maximum of 60 seconds long, in which you can, for example, tell your friends a joke or wish them a happy birthday in words and pictures. Does the feature sound familiar? In fact, WhatsApp launched it back in July 2023. However, until now it was accessed via the microphone button. This had to be tapped briefly once and then turned into a camera.
New way to record video instant messages
This dual assignment of the microphone button for voice and video instant messages was apparently not well received. WhatsApp even allowed you to disable recording video instant messages in the settings. This option was removed with the update. Apparently the messenger hopes that the feature will take off in the second attempt. At least the change now prevents accidental calls using the microphone button.
With the updates, further innovations will be introduced to Android cell phones and the iPhone. New text formatting options are now available to you on Android phones. On the iPhone, however, you can fast forward and rewind videos. All you have to do is double-tap on the edge of the video. In addition, the attachments area on the iPhone has received a new design.
WhatsApp is currently undergoing a lot of change. The messenger is introducing new symbols with a QR code and lock and is working on a redesign.
