You can secure your WhatsApp chats in two ways. You either save the backup locally or in the cloud. So far, however, only a cloud backup could be easily imported when changing devices. Apparently that will change soon.

As reported by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is working on a way of exporting local backups and importing them to another device. The blog discovered corresponding information in the Android beta 2.22.20.10. However, the function has not yet been released for testing.

The innovation is practical, but could also be a bad omen. So far, WhatsApp backups can be stored in the cloud on Android cell phones without counting them against your Google Drive storage space. However, there have been rumors for a few months that Google will soon end this practice and that you may then have to purchase storage space in Google Drive for large WhatsApp backups.

In this case, the new feature would give you the option of backing up your WhatsApp chats to an external storage medium free of charge and importing them again if necessary. So it almost seems as if WhatsApp wants to be prepared just in case. As soon as there is news in this regard, we will update the article.
