Anyone who opens WhatsApp Web may be in for a surprise. There are increasing reports online that a new button can be seen in the browser version of the messenger. It is a speech bubble that contains two lines and a circle. What does the symbol stand for?

As the Peruvian online magazine La República writes, the button takes you to the new “Channels” section on WhatsApp. This is not yet available in Germany, so the button will either not be visible in the web version here or will have no function. In this section you can follow organizations, stars and clubs and will then be provided with the latest information about them via WhatsApp messages.

Separate button in the browser for channels

What is surprising is that WhatsApp has merged the area in the app with the “Status” area to form the new “Updates” category. It remains unclear why both areas now have separate buttons in the web version.

A new button is not only appearing in the web version of WhatsApp. We’ll tell you what other new symbols are all about, like the arrow next to your name and the wave in group chats. And of course you’ll also find out why this button shows you a laughing cat on a skateboard.
