The Meta messaging application is constantly evolving and is regularly enriched with new features. But, in the long run, you may get a little lost between the new icons and additional tabs.

In recent months, you may have noticed the appearance of a small flag on some of your messages? It’s not the most obvious feature of WhatsApp, but it’s important nonetheless. Indeed, if this icon appears when you are in a temporary conversation, this means that the messages exchanged will not be automatically deleted.

A very useful little flag

The ability to start a temporary conversation is a very common feature on instant messaging services. It’s a great way to exchange important information, talk about secrets or plan a surprise birthday party discreetly. WhatsApp goes even further, because since April, the service allows you to save ephemeral messages.

Except that this functionality is not very well indicated at first glance. To find it, you must go to a conversation and activate the temporary messaging function. To do this, simply click on the icon at the top right of the screen, the one with the three small dots, then go to “ Temporary messages ”, and finally follow the instructions.

Once this is done and ephemeral messages have been sent, you can long press on one of them to highlight it. At the top of the screen, you will then see several new icons which will allow you to delete it, respond to it, transfer it or… keep it. This is the famous little flag, which you can click on to bypass automatic deletion. The icon then appears next to the time the message was sent. Finally, the procedure will be the same to cancel this option.

Does this make WhatsApp’s fleeting chat feature a bit useless? Not really, because this tool can be used to store important information, which we want to keep a little longer for example. However, it is essential to know how to spot this flag to ensure the confidentiality of a conversation. Finally, if only retained messages are preserved once the temporary conversation period has expired, they can always be deleted later, at any time.
