WhatsApp will allow group chats on a (very) large scale

WhatsApp will very soon double the maximum number of participants in its group chats to more than 1,000 potential speakers. A novelty which will however not allow the service to compete with its rival Telegram in this field.

To gradually catch up with competing messaging apps, WhatsApp is preparing to once again increase the maximum number of participants in its group chats. Long limited to 256 people, the cats groups on WhatsApp had recently increased to a maximum of 512 concurrent users. A number that will double once again to soon reach the milestone of 1024 participants, says the specialized site WABetaInfo.

However, this novelty is not yet ready to be offered on a large scale. Currently, it is rolling out to some users with access to the WhatsApp beta. Selected users can, however, test these expanded group chats on Android as well as on iOS, we read.

WhatsApp far behind Telegram in group chats

Despite this upward revision in the number of group chat participants, WhatsApp remains far behind its competitor Telegram. As reminded SamMobilethe Russian platform can accommodate up to 200,000 people on a single group chat.

Completely disproportionate for use in family or friends, this quantity of potential interlocutors is on the other hand very relevant for some, media, organizations or companies seeking above all to disseminate information. Since the start of the conflict in Ukraine, this feature has been all the more useful as Telegram is one of the few platforms allowing the censorship put in place by the Kremlin to be circumvented.

Regarding WhatsApp, the increase to 1024 people maximum on group conversations should not change anything in terms of operation or interface. The principle remains a priori the same as when the service was limited, a few months ago, to 256 users per group.
