At the end of October 2022, WhatsApp will no longer work on certain Apple smartphones. Users will be prompted to choose a new model before this deadline, or to update their operating system.
Bad news for those – rare – who do not give in to the consumerist madness in the smartphone industry. As is regularly the case, WhatsApp will drop support for some devices, presumably to allow the introduction of features not possible on older operating systems. Today, versions 10 and 11 of iOS are concerned, as well as the iPhone 5 and 5C.
A screenshot shared by Wabetainfo reveals that WhatsApp will stop supporting these versions of Apple’s mobile operating system after October 24, 2022. Information confirmed by reading an article published on the center of official WhatsApp help, which lists iOS 12 and newer as supported and recommended operating systems. Users who wish to continue using Facebook’s messaging app (Meta) will therefore need to upgrade to a more recent version of iOS.
This decision of WhatsApp is also justified by the proportion of users of a device or system. “To choose what to drop support each year, like other tech companies, we look at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest people still using them.explains the company. These devices may also lack the latest security updates or lack the features required to run WhatsApp. Before we stop supporting your operating system, you will be notified directly in WhatsApp in advance and reminded repeatedly to upgrade.”
