WhatsApp continues to innovate to stay competitive. As noted by the WABetaInfo site, the Meta-owned instant messaging service is developing a new feature to hide its online status.

For now, an “online” status tells your contacts if you’re using WhatsApp. Convenient if you want to be sure not to annoy someone when you send a message, this feature can also be problematic. It is indeed not really possible currently to log into WhatsApp without your contacts knowing, or to hide your activity from people likely to harass you.

The novelty unearthed by WABetaInfo is in line with recent efforts by WhatsApp in terms of privacy and will allow everyone to hide this famous “online” status. The feature is under development and not even present in beta versions of the app yet. It is therefore difficult to give a precise date of officialization. Nevertheless, it seems that WhatsApp is changing its policy to allow you to be more discreet on the platform.

WhatsApp in private mode

Currently, only a screenshot of the iOS application shows what this new feature will look like, but the option will be present on Android as well, specifies WABetaInfo. At the moment, it is only possible to disable the login history (so that no one can know when you were last logged in). To change who can see this info, simply go to the settings of WhatsApp (three dots at the top right), then in Account then Privacy. From there, you can choose who — between “everyone”, “your contacts” or “no one” — has access to your connection history.

The presence indicator will follow the same settings as this option. Preventing everyone from knowing your online presence will somehow allow browsing in “private” mode on WhatsApp. A welcome novelty for all Internet users who have already had to deal with harassment problems.
