When AI meets AR: ChatGPT arrives on the Vision Pro

One of the biggest names in artificial intelligence joins one of the biggest names in mixed reality: OpenAI launches a VisionOS ChatGPT application for Apple’s Vision Pro.

ChatGPT on Vision Pro

OpenAi announced the release of the application onfeaturing a video of someone asking ChatGPT to “explain superconductors like I was five” – along with the simple answer provided by the AI.

You may be wondering (and so are we) the benefit of transferring an application primarily based on text to a device primarily featuring 3D and augmented reality. To compensate for this lack of interactivity, like the mobile versions of ChatGPT, the version for the Vision Pro offers to ask questions to the AI by voice. The answers are also read aloud. And that’s about it.

If ChatGPT allows its users to generate images, produce unique content, obtain advice and solve problems, it does not offer an application that would particularly correspond to the world of Vision Pro. For now, at least.

An AI future

But this announcement from OpenAI makes us think about the future of AI and AR. Today you can have a conversation with an AI. But tomorrow, maybe an improved version of Google Lens could let you send an image directly from what you’re seeing. What if, for example, you could look at the contents of your fridge and ask the AI to suggest a recipe with what you have left? Or, ask him to explain this complex instruction in your child’s homework?

So, even if ChatGPT currently has no real use for Apple’s mixed reality headset, it’s a first step towards the future. And with companies like Google, which is already deploying AI video generation tools, we can imagine that immersion through AI-generated video is not far away.

If you want to try ChatGPT on your Vision Pro, the OpenAI app is available on the VisionOS App Store.
