Chinese manufacturer Chuwi recently unveiled a laptop
with a “punch” webcam positioned in a corner of the screen.

It’s hard not to draw the parallel between this idea and that of Apple, which has put its camera in a prominent notch.

A small punch in the top

This is one of the only points that could be criticized against Apple when announcing the MacBook Pro M1 Pro and M1 Max. First seen as a sign of the addition of Face ID to Apple laptops, the notch was ultimately criticized by both sides. The reason for this is simple, it only contains the webcam. An unnecessary sacrifice for many people who believe that it could have been placed above the screen, as Huawei did with its Matebook X Pro 2022.

But there is now a new way of conceiving the positioning of the webcam on a laptop: neither above the screen, nor in a key of the keyboard, nor with a notch, but with… a punch, as on many smartphones of recent years. It is the Chuwi company which opens the ball with its MiniBook X. Even if the purpose is visually pleasing to the eye, the use of an operating system not suitable for this type of camera placement may be rather disconcerting at times.

For detail, Chuwi’s MiniBook X will be equipped with a 10.8-inch 2K display, with a 16:10 aspect ratio. In terms of performance, the brand relies on an Intel Celeron N5100 of 11e generation and on 12 GB of LPDDR4X RAM, all coupled with a 512 GB SSD. We do not know if it will be offered outside the borders of China, but its price is estimated at around 599 dollars.
