Undoubtedly the most powerful, most advanced and most popular graphics engine, Unreal Engine 5 allows you to do anything crazy!
Officially launched exactly two years ago, Unreal Engine 5 is already used by some of the biggest studios, but its power and features are of interest to all developers.
Quite a few small teams have thus embarked on more or less ambitious projects to port “old glories” of video games in order to give them back the shine they deserve, thanks to the Unreal engine.
Unreal Engine 5: the most powerful engine?
Unveiled in May 2020, Unreal Engine 5 is unsurprisingly the fifth iteration of what remains one of the most prominent graphics engines today. But this iteration will have taken its time.
Early access was implemented a year after this announcement, but it was still only a year later that the final version was made available to developers, on April 5, 2022 to be exact. Since then, Epic Games has continued work on its engine, and versions 5.1, 5.2 and 5.3 have already been released. 5.4 is currently in preview.
Without ever talking about ray tracing, Epic Games has integrated major features into its Unreal Engine 5 such as Nanite (management of immense quantities of micropolygons) and Lumen (global lighting solution with dynamic reflections). A Temporal Super Resolution system is also there to manage the oversampling so dear to graphics card manufacturers.
Unreal Engine 5 also stands out for its “in context” animation tools to create skeletons that can then be easily adapted to each need and for its procedural audio design tools.
Rayman more beautiful than ever!
So many assets give ideas to Square Enix studios (Kingdom Hearts 4) or CD Projekt RED (The Witcher 4), but also to smaller teams like that of a certain Mark Holubowski.
Like thousands of others around the world, the latter did not opt for the creation of a game ex nihilobut for a remake, in this case that of Rayman 3, a reference signed by Ubisoft. This involves putting the first level of the game “in Unreal Engine 5 style”. This means taking all the textures and animations, and integrating everything into a completely redesigned universe.
The work is colossal and commands respect, but this respect is all the greater when we see the result presented on video. Of the remakes, there are some completely missed, others visually attractive, but which are satisfied with the aesthetics. Mark Holubowski’s work is much more ambitious, with the integration of gameplay mechanics… well, from what we can judge.
On his ArtStation page, Mark Holubowski explains that he was also forced to rethink all the logic of movement, combat and even the gem collection system. He sees this project as a hobby in order to better understand how Unreal Engine 5 works, and if we have no way of playing at this level, his work is still a pleasure to see!
