On paper, If You Revenge Me has all the ingredients of a deja vu teen movie. Especially since this is the third collaboration between Camila Mendes and Netflix, and the result so far has been more than average. The actress changes the situation with this nugget of black comedy where she gives the reply to Maya Hawke. A duet and a crossover netflixian (one plays in Riverdale and the other in Stranger Things) that we would have imagined but which works very well on the screen.
Mendes slips into the skin of Drea, a high school student with a scholarship who sees her life change when her boyfriend uploads a video of her naked. When she crosses paths with Eleanor and learns that the latter wants revenge on a girl from her high school, the two teenagers make an agreement to settle their respective accounts. But nothing will go as planned…
Free adaptation of Hitchcock’s Stranger on the Nord-Express, If you avenge me is also full of nods to 90s teen movies, from the decor to Clueless outfits to Maya Hawke’s makeover Lolita way Despite myself. Fans of the genre will be served. Even more with this cameo – we leave you the surprise of course – with an essential star of this period.
In addition to the on-screen chemistry between our two heroines, we also appreciated the twist that reshuffles the cards and does not make Si tu me venges a predictable and conventional film. Hats off also to the rest of the cast – impeccable – made up of Austin Abrams (Dash & Lily), Alisha Boe (13 Reasons Why), Rish Shah (Miss Marvel) or even Sophie Turner.
