when the melodrama pirates the manga

THE OPINION OF THE “WORLD” WHY NOT

Full of sight, and full of ears: One Piece Film – Red, the essential film adaptation of the most popular manga in history (490 million albums sold worldwide), hits theaters in France this Wednesday, August 10. Open your eyes wide, to try not to miss anything of the virtuosity of the graphics, sent at triple gallop, and get ready to endure the long sweet pop songs of Uta, central character of the film to which the French composer and interpreter Hoshi lends his voice.

Uta is the childhood friend of the manga hero, Luffy alias “Straw Hat”, and she is also the daughter of the iconic pirate Shanks the Redhead. “I’m tired of drawing legendary old men in movies! Let me draw a girl! », explains Eiichiro Oda, the writer of the series and production supervisor of One Piece Film – Red, quoted in the press kit.

Tormented family history

A little reminder of Luffy’s very first adventures, narrated in the first volumes of the manga (number 102 is expected in September): originally, the young boy, a fan of pirates, had stolen the fruit of “gum” from Shanks le Roux. gum”, which has the magic power to give humans extraordinary body elasticity. But, the other side of the coin, this fruit makes you unfit to swim. One day of battle, Luffy fell into the water, was attacked by a monster and was saved in extremis by Shanks the Roux, who left an arm there. Infinitely grateful, Luffy promised Shanks the Redhead to become Pirate King. He gave him his straw hat.

One Piece Film – Red opens with a huge open-air concert, given by the popular singer Uta, awaited by an impatient crowd. His crystalline (and tense) voice would have the power to change the world plagued by conflict, with his horde of pirates sowing permanent disorder. Very quickly, the show turns into a rat race, the pacifying ambition of the starlet not being to everyone’s taste. In fact, the red-haired singer expresses a revolt against her father, a legendary pirate, and the whole point of the film – in addition to the aerobatic numbers and twirling fights – consists in digging into the tormented family history.

A bit sluggish, the scenario switches to melody, with flashbacks and a return to Uta’s childhood, when she was inseparable from Luffy. Has Uta become an ungrateful girl? Has his father shown himself to be up to it? Well-meaning, the film does not overload the boat with its characters. Otherwise, how to go back to sea?
