The Airbnb platform is in turmoil before the Olympic Games. Her hosts continue to earn a lot of money thanks to her.

Just over two months before the start of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, there is an entity that is sure to have a full house: Airbnb. The online accommodation rental site is being taken over by French people wanting to maximize the presence of tourists during the Olympic period, as well as those desperately looking for accommodation. What is certain is that Airbnb hosts are already making a lot of money.

A median income that flirts with 4,000 euros per year for Airbnb hosts

Questioned by our colleagues from Free MiddayClément Eulry, the director of Airbnb for France and Belgium, provided some juicy information on the motivations and median income of Airbnb hosts in France.

According to him, six out of ten people who rent their accommodation on the platform see Airbnb as “ a way to make ends meet “. An easy income therefore, even if it may be the source of additional taxes, in a period when the purchasing power of the French is for many not immense.

According to Clément Eulry, the median annual income generated by an Airbnb host in the country is 3,900 euros gross. Please note, unlike the average income, the median income is positioned so that 50% of hosts receive a higher income, and the other 50% a lower income. For comparison, the median salary of the French was, in 2021, 2,100 euros net per month. We are therefore here on the basis of a generous thirteenth month, or even much more, for the lowest salaries.

The number of Airbnb accommodations exploded at the start of the year

Many French people (there are already hundreds of thousands of them doing so) are taking advantage or will take advantage of the Olympic Games to rent out their house or apartment on Airbnb. In the Île-de-France region alone, where most of the events will take place, 130,000 accommodations are popping up on the platform.

Compared to the first quarter of 2023, there were 40% more accommodations at the end of the first quarter of this year », Explains the boss of Airbnb. A very revealing statistic, which extends to its full extent around the major host cities of the Olympic Games, such as Paris obviously but also Marseille (football, sailing), Villeneuve-d’Ascq (basketball, handball) or Lyon (football). Other cities, close to the training sites, are also benefiting from the enthusiasm for the Olympic Games.

Regarding the “public” who rent their accommodation on Airbnb, don’t expect to come across clichés: we find all socio-professional categories. Clément Eulry recalls “ that you can be an owner as well as a tenant occupant, with the authorization of your owner ”, to become an Airbnb host.

Some chemistry with Tech, certainly, but also with the world of media, sport and travel. In addition to journalism, video production and animation, I have a YouTube channel (in my name) which should pique your curiosity if you like beautiful walks around the world, new technologies and music 🙂
