The PV bring each year an astronomical sum to the State. Between bad parking and speeding, the State collects a sum that it reinvests in the maintenance of radars, road safety or public transport. A part also contributes to reducing the public debt.
It is this Monday that the examination of the 2023 finance bill begins in public session in the National Assembly. The opportunity to look at the expenses but also the revenues of the State. Among these, there is the product of parking and traffic tickets that French motorists pay each year. And for the state budget, it’s a real little nest egg.
A jackpot of 1.9 billion euros for the State
In 2023, traffic violations are expected to bring in 1.9 billion euros to the State. A figure that increases by 150 million euros compared to the revenue forecast for 2022. The most profitable for the State is speeding. Excluding the increase, they should bring in more than 750 million euros in 2023. It must be said that the rate of fines for speeding goes from 70 to more than 3,500 euros.
Part of the revenue from the PV is used to buy and maintain speed cameras, but also to fund road safety and develop public transport for local communities. The rest of the loot helps to reduce the State’s debt, which will pay itself nearly 700 million euros in 2023. Speed cameras are omnipresent on the side of the roads in France. There should be more than 4,500 by the end of the year. But rest assured, the State will soon no longer be able to install new ones, because the law sets a ceiling of 4,700 radars.
