With the end of main development of Cyberpunk 2077CD Projekt Red is deploying more and more resources in its next game, The Witcher 4. This will be the first part of a trilogy, the release date of which is not yet known.
It’s time for big maneuvers at CD Projekt Red. During the presentation, at the end of November, of its results for the third quarter of 2023, the Polish studio lifted part of the veil covering its future projects in video games. On this occasion, we were able to see the rise in power of the teams responsible for developing the suite of The Witcher.
Thus, there are currently nearly 330 developers mobilized in the project The Witcher 4a sequel that had been hoped for for years – the company had started talking about it in 2017, almost two and a half years after the release of Wild Huntthe third part (which will subsequently be entitled to two extensions: Hearts of Stone And Blood and Wine).
This number will continue to increase in the coming months, according to comments from CD Projekt Red management, reported by the American press. The studio plans to bring together more than 400 developers by mid-2024. To underline the importance of The Witcher 4 in the group’s projects, management has specified that almost half of its workforce is now involved.
The deployment of much greater resources allocated to The Witcher 4 obviously benefits from the “end” of Cyberpunk 2077. The title, released in 2020, was entitled to an extension in the fall, Phantom Liberty. There will be no others, for technical reasons. CD Projekt Red is abandoning REDengine, its aging graphics engine, in favor of Unreal Engine.
If the studio is indeed planning a “Cyberpunk 2”, it will not see the light of day for years. Resources are now redirected to The Witcher 4, which is the first part of a trilogy which will span several years. The whole also forms the Polaris project. As for the current Cyberpunk 2077it no longer requires such detailed monitoring, except to release a few fixes.
Other games The Witcher on rails
Besides the trilogy The Witcher 4, made official in spring 2022, CD Projekt Red has other projects in progress. The Sirius project is a project always linked to The Witcherbut wanting to propose “ a new approach to the universe “. Probably a game more focused on narrative, given the relatively modest size of the CD Projekt Red subsidiary to which this work was entrusted.
Let us also mention the Canis Majoris project, which presents itself as a spin-off, in an open world, as well as the wish to make a remake of the very first The Witcher, released in 2007 (this title had already benefited from an upgrade the following year with the release of a so-called improved version). This remake will not be released before the launch of The Witcher 4according to the studio.
