This is it: the series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, produced by Amazon, was released. If you’ve seen all eight episodes, you’ve certainly recognized familiar locations, characters, and artifacts. Memories that may have made you want to dive back into Peter Jackson’s iconic trilogies, namely The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
In these six films, it is also about mithril (the famous ore of the Dwarves), Palantir (a sphere capable of crossing time and space) or Narsil (a sword which will play a key role in history) . There are even the Ents, these venerable trees which participate in the fall of Isengard, the tower in which the magician Saruman ended up taking refuge.

Which SVOD site offers The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings in streaming ?
The SVOD market is organized in such a way that films and series never always remain on one and the same subscription video-on-demand platform, except when they are works produced in-house. So it happens that movies like The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings can find a time on an SVOD site, before going elsewhere.
- On Amazon Prime Video, you can find the three films of the first LotR trilogy, namely The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. But that’s not all: the three feature films of the Hobbit : An Unexpected Journey, The desolation of Smaug and The Battle of the Five Armies.
You also have the option of buying or renting the films on sites like YouTube or MyCanal, but these tracks may not be the ones you want to retain.
The unit price is expensive (2.99 euros for the rental of a film) compared to the price of a monthly subscription to Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. Indeed, count almost 18 euros to rent the six films (if you make the complete series) or about 9 euros for a trilogy. Might as well take a month’s subscription, which costs around 6 euros for Amazon Prime and 9 euros for Netflix.
Subscribing to Amazon Prime Video for a month is a way to access films at an affordable price (it also has other advantages).
If you of course already have the works at home, on DVD or Blu-ray, there is no need to subscribe to an SVOD offer. And with the end of the first season, it might be a good time to do that infamous Middle-earth video marathon you’ve always wanted to do, but keep putting off. In what order to watch the movies Hobbit and Lord of the Rings ?
You basically have two options:
- viewing according to the release date of the films in the cinema;
- viewing according to the chronology of the story.
In short, you will put either the trilogy of Lord of the Rings first, either that of Hobbit.
What is the story of Hobbit and Lord of the Rings ?
The three films of Hobbit tell the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, a young hobbit, chosen against his will as the last member of a company of thirteen Dwarfs, accompanied by the magician Gandalf the Grey.
Under the command of the fallen Prince Thorin Oakshield, the company sets out for Erebor—the lonely mountain and stronghold of the Dwarf kingdom. The young Hobbit will have to leave the gentle hills and rivers of the county, his native region, in order to help the dwarves to reconquer their kingdom held by the fire-breathing dragon Smaug.
The second trilogy takes place years later. This time, it is Bilbo’s nephew, Frodo Baggins, who takes the road to Mordor in the company of a community around a mysterious ring, once discovered by his uncle. The issues are different. Do not fight a dragon, but destroy this ring to banish a demonic lord: Sauron.
How long are the movies?
If you want to watch all the films of the Hobbit or Lord of the Ringsexpect it to be quite long — as an average movie lasts 2h50.
Note that there are two versions for movies: standard and long versions. Regarding the latter, it adds additional scenes that do not affect the viewing or the course of the story. But, these scenes are still pleasant to discover, especially if you are a fan of Tolkien’s universe.
