Apple presented this Monday, June 5, the Vision Pro, its first augmented reality headset. A few days before, Meta presented the Quest 3, the latest addition to its range. Both want to conquer the market and announce superb screens, but who wins the match?

It’s jostling at the level of augmented reality: two helmets were presented a few days apart and both intend to democratize this technology. On one side, the Meta Quest 3, on the other, the Apple Vision Pro. Which of the two has the best screens?

Apple Vision Pro: Oled and 23 million pixels

On its site, Apple prides itself on offering more pixels than a 4K television, for each eye. Each of the two slabs is a micro-Oled screen, which merged together give a definition of 23 million pixels. Everything suggests that Apple follows the standards of the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), which organizes among other things the CES, since the company is a member. According to her, therefore, the 4K definition corresponds to at least 3840 by 2160 pixels. By adding the number of pixels of two screens with this precise definition, we arrive at approximately 16.6 Mpx.

But that’s not what Apple announced: the brand talked about 23 million pixels, no more, no less. Which gives 11.5 million pixels per screen. We can therefore assume that the definition of the screens of the Apple Vision Pro will exceed 3840 by 2160 pixels.

The manufacturer also indicates a response time of 12 milliseconds, a performance allowed by the R1 chip, dedicated to augmented reality headsets. Apple did not specify anything about the refresh rate of the Vision Pro screens.

Meta Quest 3: no details, but a little worry

Meta, meanwhile, is even more silent than its competitor on the Meta Quest 3 screens. We just know that it will offer the best resolution that the manufacturer has ever marketed on an augmented reality headset.

However, we can rely on the best current definition in the Meta range. These are the screens of the Meta Quest 2 (the Meta Quest Pro is slightly less good on this point): two screens with 1834 by 1920 pixels each time. Which gives a total of just over 7 MP. Since Meta didn’t specify what the definition of Quest 3 was, we can assume that it is not significantly larger than that of Quest 2; the same goes for the refresh rate.

Apple Vision Pro vs Meta Quest 3: A winner is emerging

Difficult to do with the few indications of the two companies, scanty details on the screens of their augmented reality helmets. But a winner seems to emerge: Apple.

The definition of just one of the two screens of his product could be greater than the total definition of the Meta Quest 3. However, this is quite logical: the Meta Quest Pro had been launched at 1499 dollars in the United States, while the Quest 3 will retail for $499. We are very far from the approximately 3499 dollars that will have to be collected to be able to afford Apple’s Vision Pro at the start of 2024.
