Sales of electric cars have exceeded two million units in Europe in 2023, according to figures from ACEA. However, some countries are electrifying at a much faster rate than others.
Thus, the market share of electric cars in EU countries, EFTA and the United Kingdom stood at 15.7% in 2023, but it is driven by certain markets and weighed down by others. ‘others. As in 2022, it is Norway which takes the lead in the ranking, by far, with 82.4% of cars registered in 2023 which were electric. Iceland is now the second European country where electric cars obtain the absolute majority, with 50.1% of registrations.
However, it is Germany which takes the lead in the European ranking of electric car sales by volume, with 524,219 units in 2023, or more than a quarter of electric vehicle registrations in Europe. Despite a lower market share than the Nordic countries, with an energy mix which included 18.4% electric cars in 2023, Germany benefits from its position as the leading European automobile market. The recent removal of aid for the purchase of an electric car across the Rhine could nevertheless slow down its adoption there.
Only two European countries saw the market share of electric cars decline in 2023. These are Croatia (- 0.3 pt) and the United Kingdom (- 0.1 pt). Finally, Slovakia remains the European country where electric cars have the most difficulty convincing, with only 2.7% market share.
