This year, the Netherlands wins the title of new European champion of electromobility! Electric cars have overtaken gasoline cars in number of sales.

If in Europe, EV sales have overtaken diesel in 2023, the Netherlands is going even further. By 2023, electric cars have sold like hotcakes across the country and have outsold gasoline cars. A great result for manufacturers, greatly helped by a policy largely in favor of electrification.

A great rise in electric

Over the past year, 100% electric vehicles represented 30.8% of the Dutch automobile market. A very good progression, equivalent to an increase of 7.5 points compared to the year 2022. If we add to this the sales of simple hybrids or plug-in hybrids, this share even increases to 67.9%. In comparison, 100% electric cars in France captured only 16.8% of market share over the same year.

These excellent results are partly due to the implementation of state subsidies and tax incentives, pushing consumers to turn to electricity. Result: the market shares of gasoline cars were overtaken, as they fell to 30.4%. As for diesel models, we can almost consider them rare birds, because they only represent 1.1% of registrations.

Market leaders

Without too many surprises, the Tesla Model Y remains firmly in its position and remains the best-selling vehicle with 13,758 units. However, the model does not appear in the top 5 registrations. Volkswagen is the leading manufacturer, with a total of 34,958 registrations on Dutch soil. Next comes Kia, not so far from the German giant, with 33,504 registrations in total. Toyota is not to be outdone, with its 25,576 units sold in one year, closely followed by BMW (20,529 sales) and Skoda (20,498 sales).

To avoid any confusion, it is necessary to distinguish between a vehicle registered And sold :

  • Vehicle sale: here we refer to the act of purchasing a vehicle, where the transition between a customer and a commercial entity has been made. This does not mean, however, that the vehicle is put directly into circulation.
  • Vehicle registration: stage which occurs after the sale, where the vehicle in question is registered with the competent authorities and receives its unique plate. In certain cases, there may be a slight gap between the deed of sale and registration.

The example of the Netherlands is the perfect example of the result of the synergy between a convincing offer and adapted public policies. In return, the pool of consumers is affected by a phenomenon of growing adoption; in this case: electric vehicles. These are no longer just a simple trend in the land of tulips, but the symptom of a real change of direction in terms of mobility.
