No offense to Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power, The Boys is probably still Prime Video’s most popular series. Its season 4 is therefore awaited by fans. To wait until its broadcast (most likely in 2024), here is our selection of the ten best series like The Boys.

Since its release on Prime Video in 2019, the superhero series as violent as it is irreverent The Boys will have inspired many other works on the small screen. Whether it’s original shows or other adaptations of comics just as loaded with hemoglobin, there’s plenty to keep you busy today if you’re a fan of the genre. However, you still have to know where to look and know which ones to avoid (it’s you we’re looking at, Jupiter’s Legacy). This is where our selection comes in! Here are the best series to watch if you are a fan of The Boys.

Gen V

Let’s start by kicking an open door with Gen V. It is in fact a series derived from The Boys designed precisely to fill in until season 4 (especially since its plot takes place in parallel with the end of season 3). Located at a university specifically designed for empowered young adults, Gen V adds the many problems of adolescence and difficult childhoods to the already loaded cocktail of The Boys. Unsurprisingly, the result is not to be put before all eyes and ears, and it is not impossible that the plot of Gen V is important for that of season 4 of the parent series. An obligatory step for fans, therefore.

The Boys present: Les Diaboliques

Let’s move on to another obvious point for those who follow the news of The Boys since its arrival on Prime Video with The Boys present: Les Diaboliques. This time it is a spin off animated (designed to fill in before season 3), where each short independent episode allows you to explore a little of the world of Eric Kripke’s show… or to simply have fun. The visual style of each episode is different and the whole thing mainly serves as a little digestive while waiting for the main course which is the parent series.

Invincible

Let’s stay in animation with what most resembles The Boys currently on the small screen outside of its spinoffs : Invincible. Currently consisting of two seasons, this series taken from the eponymous comic book is also not short on surprises and heroes who use their powers in unconventional ways. Featuring an incredible vocal cast (Steven Yeun, JK Simmons, Sandra Oh…), the series perhaps falters a little on its visual side, but that is quickly forgiven. On the plot side, it involves following a teenager who has just awakened his powers and whose father is none other than Omni-Man, the most powerful superhero on the planet. Let us note in passing the release recently of a special episode dedicated to Atom Eve.

Peacemaker

DC movie spin-off series The Suicide Squad (the one from 2021 by James Gunn, not the criticized one from 2016 by David Ayer), Peacemaker is a small miracle from which we are still firmly awaiting a season 2. Centered on the eponymous “hero” played by John Cena, the series follows a new mission as violent as it is surprising (and regularly stupid) entrusted by Amanda Waller to our character obsessed with “ peace at all costs.” If you like “exploded” scenarios, dialogues and characters, you should not be disappointed.

Watchmen

No more humor and absurd situations, but let’s stay in a dark and serious super heroic universe with Watchmen. New adaptation of the DC comics after the 2009 film by Zack Snyder, this series version by Damon Lindelof (Lost, The Leftovers) for HBO is certainly atypical and will not please everyone. But if you like good casting, strong social messages and its central concept of an alternate reality where superheroes have become illegal because of their violent methods, go for it.

Harley Quinn

Today with four seasons (soon five), Harley Quinn is without hesitation one of our favorites. Centered unsurprisingly on the famous DC character of the same name, here voiced by Kaley Cuoco, the series follows the eventful, bloody and vulgar adventures of the Joker’s ex. She has decided to take her life back into her own hands alongside her BFF Poison Ivy, while many characters from the Batman universe gravitate around them, often highly diverted. Funny, referenced, impactful, feminist and simply entertaining, Harley Quinn is a delight.

Banshee

Let’s take a little leap aside with Banshee. Because Cinemax’s four-season series has nothing super heroic about it. On the other hand, it does not skimp on violence and quality and, above all, you will find the formidable Antony Starr there. The interpreter of Homelander plays a man with rarely legal practices who finds himself thrust into the role of sheriff of a small town. Best show in the pulp genre in recent years, Banshee has since been followed by Warrior by the same creator (Jonathan Tropper), whom we also recommend.

The Punisher

It’s impossible not to think of The Punisher when it comes to superheroes and violence. Created for Netflix, but now available on Disney+ which has recovered its Marvel marbles, The Punisher with
Jon Bernthal is made up of two seasons. Introduced in the series Daredevil, the vigilante with expeditious methods is a character whose motivations are quite interesting to follow. Too bad the rest is relatively… lukewarm. Still worth seeing if you miss The Boys.

What…If?

Let’s stay on Disney+ with the nice animated anthology series What…If? Soon to be expanded with a season 2, the show aims to explore the multiverse of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) by mixing its characters and events. The result is episodes that are often sympathetic and sometimes focused on violence, thanks in particular to the genre of animation chosen. And if you prefer something live action, Falcon and the Winter Soldier is probably the Marvel series with the most punch and closest (with all reason) to The Boys.

The Umbrella Academy

Let’s finish this selection by taking a look at Netflix with The Umbrella Academy. Normally ending in 2024 with its fourth season, the series follows a group of scattered superheroes who reunite following the death of their adoptive father. The main point in common with The Boys will certainly be its broken characters (both in their heads and in their power), or even the fact that the original material is once again a comic book. It’s not one of the most popular shows on Netflix for nothing.
