who are the 100 men who signed the platform in support of the movement?

This Tuesday, April 30, 2024, a column by Michel Broué, a mathematician and companion of Anouk Grinberg, appears in the columns of ELLE magazine, providing his support for the #MeToo movement. A letter to which 100 men from the world of the seventh art lent their voice, all signatories from the platform.

This Tuesday, April 30, 2024, our colleagues from the magazine SHE publish a column by Michel Broué, a mathematician and companion of Anouk Grinberg, in which he notably provides his support for the movement #MeToo five days after the overturning of Harvey Weinstein’s conviction for rape by the New York Court of Appeal. While the movement has notably contributed to the liberation of women’s voices in the world of cinema but also in the medical field, 100 men from the world of the seventh art have shown their support for #MeToo by becoming a signatory of this column initially published in the columns of our colleagues.

“The practice of equality is desirable, it takes away neither freedom nor pleasure but increases them”

“In the few years since the #MeToo revolution has spread, we have understood how male behavior sometimes considered harmless was experienced by women for what it was: abuse. We were faced with the systemic nature of this violence and its links with other forms of discrimination such as racism. Their ravages in terms of disorders and pathologies among the victims have finally appeared.

Contrary to what we sometimes read, we do not think that “we are attacking men”. Becoming aware of the experience of others, their perception of power struggles dating back thousands of years, is interesting and a source of openness. The practice of equality is desirable, it takes away neither freedom nor pleasure but increases them; it beautifies relationships. Is it not obvious that one person’s pleasure is not worth more than another’s dignity? Those who proclaim “we can no longer say or do anything today” confuse freedom of expression and privileges, and imply that the mistreatment of victims suited them.”

“We refuse to recognize ourselves in this hegemonic masculinity”

“It is power and its instinct for domination which attacks, as always, as everywhere, the most vulnerable. We refuse to recognize ourselves in this hegemonic masculinity. For example, having to reserve gentleness and care for the feminine gender is absurd: a man cries, a man loves, a man can be upset.

Hearing “it was a different time, we didn’t realize it” is unacceptable: “aggression”, “humiliation”, “rape” referred to the same behaviors a few years ago. They have always been destructive to the victims. It is revolting that theater and cinema serve as a cover for abuses that have nothing to do with art. It is revolting that everywhere, including in hospitals or universities, privileged places of openness and attention to others, some use their power to degrade and attack. It is revolting to use one’s prestige, whatever it may be, to abuse the admiration it arouses. The aim is to spare more than half of humanity from serious attacks. To build a better, more intelligent, more respectful, more egalitarian world. We would be honored and enriched.”
