  • The virus variant Omikron already dominates in many European countries.

  • The WHO predicts that more than half of the European population will be infected.

  • It should be ready within a few weeks.

In view of the rapid spread of omicrons, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that more than half of the people in the greater Europe area could be infected with the coronavirus variant in just two months. The Director of WHO Europe, Hans Kluge, justified this on Tuesday at an online press conference with the fact that Omikron attacks human cells more quickly because of its mutations, and this also affects those who have been vaccinated and those who have recovered.

More than half of the population

“At this rate, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) predicts that more than 50 percent of the region’s population will be infected with Omikron in the next six to eight weeks,” said Kluge, referring to the university’s research institute of Washington.

WHO Europe is responsible for 53 countries and areas not only in Europe but also in Central Asia. The Omikron variant is currently spreading rapidly in Europe. In several countries it is already the dominant coronavirus variant among new infections.
