The particularly contagious coronavirus variant B.1.617.2 first discovered in India is now called Delta. The World Health Organization (WHO) has decided to name the individual variants according to the Greek alphabet, as it announced on Monday evening.
This is to avoid that countries or regions are associated with certain virus variants and that people who live there or come from there are discriminated against.
According to the new scheme, the virus variant B.1.1.7 that first appeared in Great Britain is now called Alpha, the variant B.1.351 discovered in South Africa is called Beta and the variant P.1 Gamma, which was first detected in Brazil. These are the “Variants of concern” currently listed by the WHO. Other “variants of interest” have also been provided with letters from the Greek alphabet. (SDA)
