Who should triumph at the 96th Academy Awards? These are the bookmakers’ favorites in the most important Oscar categories.

When the Oscars are awarded on the night of March 10th to 11th, millions of viewers at home will be excited again. With 13 nominations, Christopher Nolan’s (53) “Oppenheimer” goes into the awards ceremony as the clear favorite. This is followed by “Poor Things” by Giorgios Lanthimos (50) with eleven nominations and “Killers of the Flower Moon” by Martin Scorsese (81) with ten and Greta Gerwig’s (40) “Barbie” with eight nominations.

But we can also hope for a prize in Germany this year: It could Sandra Hülser (45) succeed in becoming the first German since 1938 to take home a golden boy in the “Best Actress” category at the 2024 Academy Awards? Or does at least one of the two films in which Hülser appeared in 2023 – “Anatomy of a Case” and “The Zone of Interest” – have a chance of being awarded? And what about “The Teacher’s Room” by İlker Çatak (40) or Wim Wenders’ (78) “Perfect Days” in the “Best International Film” category? The bookmakers have clear favorites.

“Best movie”

There is obviously no question among the bookmakers as to which film will win the supreme discipline. According to the portal “wettfreunde.net“Oppenheimer” is the clear favorite, and the British also see the historical film with Cillian Murphy (47) in the lead. The other nominated films, including “Poor Things”, “The Zone of Interest”, “The Holdovers” and “Anatomy of a Case”. “, hardly any chances are given. The biopic “Maestro” has the least chance.

“Best Actor”

When it comes to the main actors, a clear favorite has also emerged from the five nominees: “Oppenheimer” star Cillian Murphy, who is nominated for his portrayal of the “Father of the Atomic Bomb”. Only “The Holdovers” lead actor Paul Giamatti (56) could still pose a threat to him. However, the bookmakers see little to no chance for Bradley Cooper (49, “Maestro”), Colman Domingo (54, “Rustin”) and Jeffrey Wright (58, “American Fiction”).

“Best main actress”

When it comes to women, however, there is likely to be a neck-and-neck race – between “Killers of the Flower Moon” leading actress Lily Gladstone (37), who would be the first indigenous person to win an Oscar for best actress, and “Poor Things” – Star Emma Stone (35). If the German Sandra Hülser prevails against these two favorites – as well as against the other competitors Carey Mulligan (38, “Maestro”) and Annette Bening (65, “Nyad”) – it would definitely be a small sensation.

“Best Director”

Could “Oppenheimer” achieve the double of “Best Film” and “Best Director”? At least with the bookmakers, director Christopher Nolan is the clear top favorite. A victory for his fellow contestants Giorgos Lanthimos, Martin Scorsese, Jonathan Glazer (58, “The Zone of Interest”) and Justine Triet (45, “Anatomers of a Case”) would be a big surprise.

“Best supporting actor”

There will most likely be another Oscar in one of the top categories in the “Best Supporting Actor” category for “Oppenheimer”. Robert Downey Jr. (58) is likely to bag the award for his supporting role as Lewis Straus. His colleagues Ryan Gosling (43, “Barbie”), Mark Ruffalo (56, “Poor Things”), Robert De Niro (80, “Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Sterling K. Brown (47, “American Fiction”) are leaving therefore it is very likely that it will be empty.

“The best supporting actress”

Here another film is likely to triumph over “Oppenheimer”: Although actress Emily Blunt (41) is also nominated for her role as Kitty Oppenheimer, the bookmakers see the greatest chances with Da’Vine Joy Randolph (37), who the cinema audience loves as the chef Mary in “The Holdovers” thrilled. She should also prevail against Danielle Brooks (34, “The Color Purple”), America Ferrera (39, “Barbie”) and Jodie Foster (61, “Nyad”).

“Best International Film”

In the “Best International Film” category, things are likely to be rather tight for the German hope “The Teacher’s Room” and also for Wim Wenders’ Japanese production “Perfect Days”. The bookmakers give “The Zone of Interest” the greatest chances here. The other nominees, “The Snow Company” and “I Capitano,” also don’t have much of a chance against Jonathan Glazer’s feature film.
