The sequel to Sam Raimi’s film is already teased with a new heroine, present in the post-credits scene of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Doctor Strange 2 is in theaters since Wednesday, May 4, 2022. Unlike Spider-Man No Way Homethis new Marvel feature film, directed by Sam Raimi, does not really rely on cameos, but rather on a dark story and a creative realization, at the center of which Wanda Maximoff captures all the attention thanks to Elizabeth Olsen.
Except in the heart of the scenario, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness therefore holds no major surprises on the scale of the entire MCU – Marvel Cinematic Universe. One of the two post-credits scenes, however, includes the introduction of a new character, which could well prove to be decisive for the sequel.
The first post-credits scene introduces Cléa
The first post-credits scene of Doctor Strange 2 is short, but enough to introduce the basics of a potential sequel (whose existence is hardly in doubt). As Stephen Strange wanders happily through the streets with his third eye, a transdimensional portal opens. A woman dressed in a superheroine costume comes out, accuses Stephen of having done something wrong, then takes him into the portal with her – presumably in a place in space-time called “dark dimension”.
That character is none other than Clea, and she’s played by Charlize Theron (recently seen in Mad Max Fury Road and The Old Guard). This heroine, who we see for the first time in the MCU, is quite important in the comics Doctor Strange. She is one of the most powerful characters in Marvel (a priori, even more than Doctor Strange himself). His mother is Umar, an entity from a dimension of pure magic called Faltine. She’s also the daughter of Dormammu (who we see in the first movie as a…big cosmic head).
The importance of Cléa in the comics Doctor Strange is also intimate: they live a love story, which leads them, in one of the narrative arcs, to get married. Knowing that Sam Raimi’s feature film closes the story with Christine Palmer, we can easily assume that the sequel will take the direction of this love-interest. Moreover, while Christine was telling Stephen to face his fears, this is exactly the question Cléa asks him before taking him away: “ unless you’re scared? “.
