Who is the enigmatic Alyrie Florent in House of the Dragon?

A mysterious name is pronounced by Alicent Hightower during a scene of contemplation. This identity could reveal a little-known part of the young woman’s genealogy.

The first episode of season 2 of House of the Dragon is now available for streaming on Max (HBO) and Canal+. For those who are up to date, the title chosen by the showrunners will be crystal clear. “Son for son” is the promise of revenge. A blood crime can only be washed away with the loss of a loved one.

On the other hand, episode 1 contains an enigma that will undoubtedly escape even people familiar with the world of Iron Throne. Indeed, a name never heard until now is pronounced by Alicent Hightower, while she is meditating at the great septuary, in King’s Landing, the capital of the kingdom of the Seven Kingdoms. It is then that the name of Alyrie Florent is pronounced, at the moment when Alicent Hightower lights a series of candles in memory of those who are no longer here.

Who is Alyrie Florent compared to Alicent Hightower?

How to see House of the Dragon ?

The series about the Targaryen dynasty is an HBO exclusive. You can subscribe to Canal+ or Max to find it.

Let’s say it straight away: Alyrie Florent seems to be a new character in the literary saga written by George RR Martin. His name, in any case, does not appear in the various reference encyclopedias that exist on the internet, such as the French wiki La Garde de Nuit or its English equivalent, A Wiki of Ice of Fire.

However, we can establish a hypothesis: Alyrie Florent could be the mother of Alicent Hightower. The sequence at the Great Septuary shows Alicent having a thought for loved ones. She lights a candle for Alyrie, but also two others: one for Viserys Targaryen, her late husband, and the late Lucerys, son of Rhaenyra, her former friend.

It is unknown who the wife of Otto Hightower, Alicent’s father, is. Moreover, the precise genealogy of the Hightower house is not very clear. Otto is known to have had a daughter, Alicent, and at least two sons, one of whom is known (Gwayne). On the other hand, his ancestors are not informed, any more than his wife.

It would be improbable for Alicent, when she was thinking, to mention a person who was not very close to her. The holes left by George RR Martin could be filled here by the showrunners. The mother’s lead is all the more credible as the Florent house to which Alyrie is attached comes from the same region as that of Hightower.

Both Houses Hightower and Florent are established in the Reach region, dominated by House Tyrell. We also know that there have already been unions – at least one – between these two families: that of Leyton Hightower and Rhea Florent, who thus became his fourth wife.

In episode 1 of season 1 of House of the Dragon, Otto’s wife is mentioned briefly. We learn that she died recently, during the reign of Viserys Targaryen — Otto was then one of his closest advisors, serving as Hand of the King. This death had a profound impact on Otto, who has remained a widower ever since.
