The name of the new President of the National Assembly was unveiled on Tuesday at the end of the afternoon: it was Yaël Braun-Pivet who was elected by her peers. Nominated candidate by the majority, the ephemeral Minister of Overseas becomes the first woman to access the perch.
Yaël Braun-Pivet becomes at 51, the fourth character of the State. She thus succeeds Richard Ferrand, at the head of a particularly fractured Assembly. A criminal lawyer by training, she arrived in politics thanks to the first Macronist wave in 2017, re-elected this year as deputy for Yvelines.
Incompetence lawsuits quickly swept away
She notably distinguished herself for five years at the head of the law commission, where she dealt, among other things, with the Benalla affair, the yellow vests crisis, and the Covid-19 epidemic. If the incompetence lawsuits emerged at the beginning of his taking office, Yaël Braun-Pivet ended up convincing his opponents, praising today his ability to listen and his openness.
Ensure the smooth running of exchanges
So, during the next legislature, it is she who will have to lead the debates and ensure that the exchanges run smoothly. It will also be responsible for appointing a member of the Constitutional Council at each renewal, but also two of the six members of the Superior Council of the Judiciary.
Finally, the President of the Assembly must be consulted by the Head of State before a dissolution, or during the implementation of Article 16 of the Constitution, granting exceptional powers to the President of the Republic, during of crisis.
