Several dragons are already visible in the series derived from Game Of Thrones. You have trouble identifying them and associating them with each character in House of the Dragon ? This guide is here for that.
There are many dragons in House of the Dragon. We know, however, that the first season of the series will not show all of these winged creatures, which allow the Targaryen dynasty to establish its domination over all of Westeros. Some of these reptiles will be presented later. But we already know a handful, thanks to the first episodes broadcast.
If you’re having trouble remembering who rides what in House of the Dragon, this little survival guide will allow you to resituate the characters and their mount. Already, four dragons have appeared on the screen. The others are still unknown or not yet alive—one is still in an egg, while only the skull of another remains.
Daemon commands Caraxes
Daemon, the brother of Viserys, king of the Seven Kingdoms, is a character inhabited by great brutality. He showed it as commander of the Port-Réal watchtower, when it was necessary to restore order in the city. Should we be surprised then to see him riding a dragon red in color like blood, and whose nickname is the Bloodthirsty?
Caraxès is a beast with an atypical physique, not to say deformed. Its mouth is bristling with spikes on the throat and its body is very elongated, with limbs that are arranged almost strangely. The belly seems very narrow and the neck sometimes seems endless. Caraxes plays a notable role in the conquest of the Stone Steps, in the strait between Westeros and Essos.
Rhaenyra rides Syrax
Rhaenyra, daughter of Viserys and niece of Daemon, is supposed to rule the Seven Kingdoms after the death of her father. But in Westeros, the continent has never been ruled by a woman. This imbroglio in succession is the triggering event of the Dance of the Dragons, which will be a deadly internal struggle for the Targaryen dynasty.
Syrax is a yellow-colored dragon, looking less frightening than Caraxes – if indeed a dragon in the universe of Game Of Thrones may not be terrible. Its name pays homage to a goddess of Valyria, the place where the Targaryen family comes from. She almost faced Caraxes when it came to retrieving the dreamfire dragon egg.
Rhaenys rides Meleys
You may never have been a queen, but still have a dragon and command respect. Rhaenys harbored resentment over the succession of Jaehaerys I Targaryen. It was his brother Viserys who was chosen during a great council. It is since she is nicknamed the queen who never was. But she remains at the center of the political game, through her marriage to Corlys Velaryon.
Her dragon, Meleys, is nicknamed the Red Queen, although her scales are less pronounced in hue than Caraxes, with coppery and pink hues. We have not yet seen in detail what Meleys looks like, but we could see him during a flight over the strait, within the framework of a battle in the Stone Steps, alongside Smoke-of-the- Seas
Laenor owns Fumée-des-Mers
Smoke-of-the-Seas (or Seasmoke) is a dragon with scales pulling towards gray and silver. Perhaps that is why it is named so. It is also the mount of Laenor Velaryon, son of Rhaenys and Corlys. Now, Corlys was a very famous marine explorer then, who sailed on all known seas. And the Velaryon family is one of the most important maritime powers.
Laenor Velaryon comes from a line similar to the Targaryens, across the straits. He has white hair too, like the rest of his family. Smoke-of-the-Seas is a dragon that we see in action for the first time in House of the Dragon during the Battle of the Stone Steps. He is mobilized like Meleys to try to take control of this strategic area.
Laena controls Vhagar
Vhagar is already an old dragon when Laena Velaryon takes possession of it. This very large beast existed long before Aegon’s Conquest of Westeros. Vhagar was so imposing that his height approached that of Balerion, the Black Terror. Unlike the latter, born in Valyria, on the continent of Essos, Vhagar was born in Dragonstone, in Westeros.
The huge winged reptile was ridden by Visenya Targaryen, his sister, and later by Baelon, Viserys’ father (and d’Aegon’s great-grandson). Clearly, he rubbed shoulders with the entire Targaryen dynasty on Westeros. The death of Laena will open a period where the beast will no longer be ridden, until Aemond Targaryen, son of Viserys and Alicent, finally takes possession of it.
Jacaerys at Vermax
Vermax is a dragon game at the time the series takes place House of the Dragon. This dragon has been attributed to Jacaerys Velaryon, son of Rhaenyra Targaryen and Laenor Velaryon—he is officially the father, anyway. In the series, we witness the taming of Vermax by Jacaerys, speaking to him in High Valyrian – a language that dragons understand.
Still brash, Vermax struggles to submit to his young master’s commands—especially when presented with such enticing prey as a goat. This will change over time. The dragon has scales of a greenish tint, while the wings pull towards an orange color. He can be found in Dragonpit at the start of the adventure, which is the dragon enclosure.
Balerion, known as the Black Terror
It’s a dragon that no longer exists at the time of the Dance of the Dragons, but it had to be mentioned. Balerion is the one who calls himself the Black Terror. It was with this mount that Aegon conquered Westeros and earned his nickname Conqueror — and this episode is called the Conquest. Balerion was undoubtedly one of the major plagues of the time.
He was the largest of the known dragons at the time in Westeros. Black in color, he lived in ancient times, a little over a century before what happened in House of the Dragon. What remains of Balerion is shown in the series, during a moment of contemplation in the crypt. This is when Viserys confides a secret to his daughter Rhaenyra.
