Broadcast since June 22 in the United States, season 2 of the sequel to Sex and the City is not found in France, while Salto had obtained the exclusive rights to the series. An anomaly that could soon be resolved.
In March 2023, Salto passed away. The French streaming service, the fruit of the alliance between TF1, M6 and France Télévisions, offered several original content such as the series And Just Like ThatFollowing Sex and the City.
On June 22, Season 2 of And Just Like That began its broadcast abroad. In France, many fans of the series are wondering about its broadcaster, in the absence of Salto. Numerama has inquired and has bad news: there is currently no legal way to watch season 2 of the series in France.
Why “And Just Like That” is not available in France
With the death of Salto, the rights for the first broadcast of And Just Like That are in nature. That means broadcasters can up the ante to acquire the series… but none seem to have managed to do so in time for Season 2.
Since And Just Like That is signed HBO Max (a streaming service renamed “Max” a few months ago), logic would have liked the series to land in the Warner Pass on Prime Video, a paid option at 9.99 euros per month which allows you to find all the Warner Bros. productions. Discovery, including HBO series. But this is not the case.
Contacted by Numerama, a representative of the Warner Bros. Discovery explains: “The Warner Pass offers all the ‘HBO Original’ series, the And Just Like That series… is a Max Original series for which broadcasting agreements are made on a case-by-case basis. “. In other words, the arrival of And Just Like That on Prime Video is not automatic, since the series was designed for the streaming service, not for the HBO channel. Amazon is therefore a potential broadcaster like any other, which complicates obtaining the rights to the series.
How to watch “And Just Like That” in France?
Among the candidates to recover the rights of And Just Like That, there is of course Prime Video (with or without Warner Pass) and Netflix, but neither seem to have signed anything yet. The fact that TF1 is broadcasting the series at a later stage could also encourage it to apply for its own streaming service, myTF1 Max, as some suspect.
The Warner Bros group. Discovery tells Numerama that ” Discussions are ongoing “, which suggests that we won’t have to wait for the Max streaming service in 2024 or 2025 to watch the series. This is already good news.
Waiting to find out where And Just Like That will land, is there a legal way to watch the series? As absurd as it may sound, the answer is no. Even classic VOD platforms, like Apple TV and Google Play, don’t offer Season 2 in their virtual stores. A fairly rare situation, in the sense that all previous cases were resolved in time (The Last of Us bought in extremis by Prime Video for example).
A new episode of And Just Like That will air weekly, until August 24. By then, France should, we hope, have found a new broadcaster.
